We created this guide to answer the most asked questions about your baggage when traveling with Volaris. Enjoy your flight!

What baggage is included with each fare type?

We have three options: Zero, Basic, and Plus, so you can fly with the baggage you need.

Travel at our lowest price

This preferential option includes the following:

■ 1 personal item (must fit under the seat in front of you)
E.g. handbag, briefcase, laptop bag

■ Domestic check-in: available starting 3 days before the flight.

■ International check-in: available starting 24 hours before the flight.

Carry-on and checked baggage are not included with this option.

Basic

Best value

This preferential fare includes:

■ 1 personal item (must fit under the seat in front of you)
E.g. handbag, briefcase, laptop bag

■ 1 checked bag up to 33lb whose measurements do not exceed 62 in total in (length + width + height)

■ Domestic check-in: available starting 5 days before the flight.

■ International check-in: available starting 24 hours before the flight.

■ Altitude points

■ Forward your flight at the airport

Carry-on baggage is not included with this option.

Worry free

Our fare with more baggage includes:

■ 1 personal item (must fit under the seat in front of you)
E.g. handbag, briefcase, laptop bag

■ 1 carry-on bag that measures 22 x 16 x 10 in (length x width x height)

The combined weight of the personal item and carry-on bag must not exceed 44 lb.

■ 1 checked bag up to 55 lb and 62 total in (length + width + height)

■ Domestic check-in: available starting 7 days before the flight.

■ International check-in: available starting 24 hours before the flight.

Personal item, carry-on, and checked baggage: What’s the difference?

Personal item

A personal item is a small item, such as a backpack, handbag, briefcase, or laptop bag, that must fit under the seat in front of you. Its maximum dimensions are 35 × 45 × 20 cm.

Carry-on baggage

Carry-on baggage is the bag you can bring with you into the aircraft cabin. It must not exceed 55 × 40 × 25 cm (length × width × height) and must have a maximum weight of 10 kg.

Important: The combined weight of your carry-on baggage and personal item must not exceed 20 kg

Checked baggage

Checked baggage is the bag you drop off at the check-in counter before boarding and that travels in the aircraft’s cargo hold. Its maximum dimensions are 158 linear cm (length + width + height).

The permitted weight depends on the type of baggage purchased:

  • Checked baggage included in your fare: up to 15 kg or 25 kg, depending on the fare purchased.
  • Checked baggage purchased separately (stand-alone): up to 25 kg per piece.

Can I add baggage after purchasing my flight?

If you need to bring more baggage than what is included in your fare, you can add additional baggage at any of the following times:

  • When booking your flight.
  • Through My Trips.
  • In the Volaris app.
  • Before check-in.
  • Directly at the airport (applicable rates apply).
  • Through the Call Center.

Additional Baggage

Carry-on baggage

If you are traveling with the Zero or Basic fare, you can add carry-on baggage to your reservation for domestic and international flights. This baggage must not exceed the maximum permitted dimensions of 55 × 40 × 25 cm (length × width × height).

Remember that the combined weight of your personal item and carry-on baggage cannot exceed 20 kg.

We recommend adding your carry-on baggage when booking your flight or before arriving at the airport. This will help you avoid additional charges and enjoy a smoother travel experience. Plan ahead and save!

Checked baggage

For an additional fee, you can add up to 5 checked bags to your reservation. Each piece must meet the following requirements:

  • Maximum weight: 25 kg per bag.
  • Maximum dimensions: 158 linear cm (length + width + height).

If your baggage exceeds the permitted weight or dimensions, an overweight or oversized baggage fee will apply, as applicable.

The maximum weight allowed per piece, including excess weight, is 45 kg.

Maximum dimensions allowed by baggage type:

  • Musical instruments: up to 200 linear cm.
  • Sports equipment: up to 280 linear cm.

Before traveling, check the overweight and oversized baggage fees in the Additional Service Fees section.

Checked sports equipment

If you purchased an additional checked bag and would like to check a piece of sports equipment instead, you may do so at no additional cost, provided that:

  • It does not exceed the weight allowance for your baggage.
  • It does not exceed 158 linear cm (length + width + height).

If the sports equipment exceeds the permitted weight or dimensions, an additional fee will apply.

Operational Limitations

If cargo capacity on your flight is limited, additional, oversized, or overweight baggage may be transported on the next flight with available space. In this situation, we will ask you to sign an acknowledgment form to document that your baggage will be transported on a later flight.

Volaris will remain responsible for transporting and delivering your baggage to your final destination at no additional cost. Our priority is to get your baggage to your destination as quickly and safely as possible.

Recommendation

Choose soft-sided luggage or bags made from durable materials that offer a balance of lightness, flexibility, and protection, so you can travel more comfortably and securely. Although hard-shell luggage may seem more durable, many pieces are made from plastic materials that can crack, split, or break due to constant movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags can I check?

You can add up to five checked bags per passenger, subject to the applicable conditions and fees.

Can I add baggage after purchasing my ticket?

Yes. You can add baggage through My Trips, the Volaris app, the Call Center, or at the airport.

Can I check my sports equipment or musical instrument as an additional checked bag?

Yes. You can use an additional checked bag to transport sports equipment or a musical instrument at no extra cost.

  • Sports equipment: up to 25 kg and 250 linear cm.
  • Musical instrument: up to 25 kg and 158 linear cm. It can also be transported as carry-on baggage if it measures no more than 130 linear cm and weighs no more than 10 kg.
What happens if my bag exceeds the weight allowance?

If your bag exceeds the weight or dimensions included in your baggage allowance, an overweight or oversized baggage fee will apply. The maximum weight allowed per piece, including excess weight, is 45 kg.
